Austin Wells powered the New York Yankees to a 6-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night with two two-run homers, one in the third inning and another in the eighth. This marked Wells’ first career multihomer game, as he continues to excel as the Yankees’ cleanup hitter, especially against right-handed pitchers. The rookie catcher is hitting .346 with five homers and 21 RBIs in his first 20 games in the role.
Wells also has an impressive .327 average with six homers and 22 RBIs over his last 30 games, raising his season average to .256. Yankees manager Aaron Boone praised Wells’ development, noting that while his catching was already strong, his offensive performance has now caught up, making him a significant presence in the middle of the lineup.
Marcus Stroman earned his third consecutive win, allowing two runs and nine hits over seven innings, improving to 3-0 with a 2.35 ERA over his last four starts. Paul Goldschmidt had three hits, including an RBI single, but the Cardinals struggled with double plays and fell to 0-7 in regular-season games against the Yankees in the Bronx.
Juan Soto contributed with a game-tying double and an outfield assist, earning chants from the crowd to re-sign him. Jake Cousins and Clay Holmes finished off the game, with Holmes securing his 29th save of the season. Erick Fedde took the loss for the Cardinals, allowing four runs over 5 1/3 innings.
