Given this peak in value, it made business sense when Wyc Grousbeck and the Celtics ownership group announced plans to explore selling the team. While the decision surprised some, selling at the height of the team’s value is a logical move.
There has been much speculation about who might buy the Celtics, and a recent rumor suggested that Jeff Bezos was interested in the acquisition. As one of the wealthiest individuals in the world, Bezos has the financial capability to purchase the franchise independently. Previously, he was also rumored to be interested in buying the Washington Commanders when they were up for sale.

On Tuesday, a source close to Jeff Bezos informed The Information that the rumors of him attempting to purchase the Boston Celtics were “zero truth,” indicating that he has no plans to acquire the iconic team. However, this doesn’t rule out his interest in owning an NBA franchise.
Although Bezos is not pursuing the Celtics, NBC Sports NBA insider Kurt Helin reported on Wednesday that “there is speculation within NBA circles that he might be interested in a Seattle expansion team if league owners approve it in the next year or so.” Since Amazon is headquartered in Seattle, this potential interest aligns with the city’s history with the NBA.
The Seattle SuperSonics, who relocated and became the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2008, left a void in the city. In recent years, there has been a strong movement to bring an NBA team back to Seattle in the near future.
