JUST IN: Bears Depart $30 Million Ex-Starter After terminating former offensive coordinator contract

The Chicago Bears are overhauling their offense this week. First, they let go of offensive coordinator after just 10 games. Then, on Wednesday, November 30, they released offensive guard, who was placed on waivers following the team’s 19-3 home loss to the New England Patriots. He, who had reported back pain to trainers on Sunday morning, was sidelined and sent home to avoid further risk, according to coach.

During that game, the Patriots’ defense managed to sack rookie quarterback Caleb Williams nine times, as the Bears’ offense failed to score a touchdown for the second game in a row. Williams, the league leader in sacks taken, has been sacked 38 times over nine games this season.

The Bears had initially signed Davis to a three-year, $30 million contract in 2023, making him their starting right guard. However, issues with his work ethic and performance in practice became a growing problem in his second season with the team. Davis had already been benched earlier this season and missed several games, even as injuries mounted on the offensive line tasked with protecting Williams, the team’s top draft pick and major investment at quarterback.

As ESPN’s Courtney Cronin reported, Davis started 13 games across two seasons, including the first two games in 2024 before being replaced by Matt Pryor. He was a healthy scratch against Jacksonville and Washington, despite the Bears’ struggles with offensive line injuries. The team attempted to trade Davis before the November 5 deadline, even offering to cover part of his salary, but couldn’t find any interested teams.
