Stephen A. Smith claimed that WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes was removed from calling the Indiana Fever’s win over the Dallas Wings on Sunday night. Her removal allegedly followed previous criticisms of Caitlin Clark, with Smith suggesting that Bally Sports Southwest was concerned about her potential bias.
Instead, Ron Thulin and Nancy Lieberman called the game for the network. Lieberman, who appeared on Smith’s show after the Fever’s victory, confirmed his theory, stating that network producers are keen to avoid obvious bias in broadcasts.
Smith noted that Swoopes’ absence was likely tied to Clark’s standout 31-point performance against the Chicago Sky earlier in the week. He emphasized that in television, producers take action when personal feelings compromise professional duties.
Smith has long supported Clark, dating back to her college days at Iowa, while Swoopes has been critical of the Indiana star, despite claiming she doesn’t dislike her game. Smith acknowledged Swoopes’ basketball acumen but suggested that by not acknowledging Clark’s achievements, it might be perceived as personal bias.
Swoopes first drew criticism regarding Clark in March, questioning her legitimacy as a player due to her age and shot volume. Although Swoopes later apologized directly to Clark, her comments had already caused a stir. Additionally, she faced backlash for previously omitting Clark when discussing Indiana’s best players.
