Anthony Gordon, who has been a standout player for Newcastle this season, shared insights into his enhanced tactical understanding since his transfer from Everton last year. In a detailed discussion with Rio Ferdinand on ‘Between the Lines,’ the 22-year-old delved into the specifics of his goal against Manchester United this season. He also highlighted how the high standards set by manager Eddie Howe are contributing to his development as a player.
In an interview with TNT Sports’ Rio Ferdinand on Between The Lines, Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon discussed experiencing a “mindset shift” following his transfer from Everton to the club. Gordon, who has made a significant impact at St James’ Park this season, registering six goals and seven assists in 19 Premier League appearances, elaborated on one of his notable goals in a 1-0 triumph over Manchester United in December.
Demonstrating remarkable tenacity, the 22-year-old forward showcased his skill by making a run to the far post. The play unfolded as Bruno Guimaraes found Kieran Trippier, who subsequently delivered a precise ball from the right-hand side. Gordon capitalized on the opportunity and expertly slotted the ball home.
In anticipation of Newcastle’s upcoming Premier League clash against Manchester City, which will be broadcast live on TNT Sports, Gordon provided additional insights into the goal. He explained the significant evolution in his approach, stating,
“The biggest change for me in the past year is that previously, I would have wanted the ball from Bruno, attempted to showcase some individual skill, and aimed to look good, but it often didn’t result in a goal or assist.” Gordon emphasized the transformation in his mindset, saying, “Now, I’m not even focused on him [Guimaraes] passing me the ball. I’m thinking, ‘get it to Tripps, let me position myself at the back post, and score.’”
Gordon acknowledged the mindset shift, emphasizing the change in his approach. Ferdinand then presented a clip from Gordon’s time at Everton, where he didn’t exhibit the same tactical awareness to position himself more effectively in the attacking phase.
Reflecting on that footage, Gordon expressed a sense of annoyance, admitting, “That’s actually annoying to watch now.” He shared that during his time at Everton under manager Frank Lampard, who had provided valuable guidance on goal-scoring positions, he might not have been mature enough then to fully embrace and implement the advice.
The winger also conceded that adapting to Eddie Howe’s demands took some time after his move to Newcastle almost a year ago. However, he now thrives under the coaching of the former Bournemouth manager.
Gordon elaborated on the high standards set by manager Eddie Howe since day one at Newcastle, expressing his initial surprise at the level of expectation. He admitted that it took some time to adjust to these standards after joining the club. However, by immersing himself in the team environment and observing the dynamics among the players, he gradually improved and continued to progress over time.
