The New Orleans Saints filled a major gap in their lineup with their first-round pick by selecting offensive tackle Taliese Fuaga to bolster their offensive line for the upcoming season.
As they head into day two of the 2024 NFL Draft, there are three key areas where they can further improve their team:
1. Another impactful safety:
With Tyrann Mathieu performing well as a veteran and Jordan Howden emerging as a starter, the Saints still need to secure a third safety who can play deep. While picking one at 45 might be costly, they could trade up later in day two or early on day three to find the right fit. Given their history of successful mid-round defensive back picks, continuing this trend is crucial.\
2. A big-bodied pass catcher:
The Saints require another option for jump balls and plays over the middle of the field, especially with Michael Thomas departing. This target doesn’t necessarily have to be a wide receiver, as prospects like Keon Coleman may not be available at pick 45. Adding depth to their pass-catching options alongside free agent signings is essential, as relying solely on A.T. Perry isn’t sustainable.
3. Defensive line depth:
Despite signing Chase Young to bolster their edge rush, the Saints could still target defensive line prospects in round two. The interior defensive line was inconsistent in 2023, and the overall pass rush needs improvement. While Bryan Bresee is a promising addition, adding another talented interior player in round two could provide good value for the team.
Overall, addressing these areas on day two of the draft could significantly strengthen the Saints’ roster for the upcoming season.
