The Dallas Cowboys are facing high expectations for the 2024 season. Although the real test starts on September 8 against the Cleveland Browns, there’s still work to be done on the roster before then.
With the deadline to trim the roster to 53 players approaching on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET, the Cowboys have chosen to part ways with a recently acquired veteran defender.
The Cowboys have released veteran DE Carl Lawson, who joined them late in training camp, per sources. Could potentially return to the practice squad. There was no guaranteed money in the one-year deal he signed.

Cowboys News: Carl Lawson Gets Released by Dallas
According to Todd Archer of ESPN, the Dallas Cowboys have released defensive end Carl Lawson, who joined the team on August 19 with a one-year deal. Despite the recent signing, the Cowboys opted to let him go, though Archer mentioned that Lawson might return to the practice squad.
The Cowboys have been seeking additional help on the edge after Sam Williams suffered a torn ACL and MCL. Although Lawson was brought in just last week, things didn’t start off well. His performance declined after he tore his Achilles in 2021 while with the New York Jets. Last season, Lawson played in six games for the Jets, recording five tackles and no sacks.
Over his career with the Jets and Cincinnati Bengals, Lawson has amassed 119 total tackles, 27 sacks, and three forced fumbles. While there may still be some potential left in him, it’s uncertain if he’ll have the chance to prove it in a Cowboys uniform.
The Cowboys have already scheduled a meeting with another defensive lineman, which could make Lawson’s time in Dallas brief.
