The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed veteran left-handed pitcher Clayton Kershaw on the 15-day injured list after he left Friday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second inning due to a bone spur in his left big toe. The injury caused significant swelling, limiting Kershaw’s mobility, according to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. Before his early exit, Kershaw allowed three runs in the first inning, forcing the Dodgers to use nearly every reliever except Evan Phillips, who had pitched in the previous two games. In response, the Dodgers called up right-hander Ben Casparius from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Roberts mentioned that they are uncertain about the duration of Kershaw’s absence, but he doesn’t believe it will interfere with Kershaw’s stamina buildup. Kershaw, who had shoulder surgery in the offseason, has a 2-2 record with a 4.50 ERA in seven starts this season. Throughout his 17-year career with the Dodgers, the 10-time All-Star has posted a 212-94 record with a 2.50 ERA.
Additionally, the Dodgers placed right-hander Joe Kelly on the injured list due to right shoulder inflammation. Kelly, who pitched 1 2/3 innings on Friday and allowed two earned runs on three hits, holds a 1-1 record with a 5.20 ERA over 31 games this season. To fill Kelly’s spot, the Dodgers selected the contract of right-hander Brent Honeywell for his second stint with the team this season. Honeywell was designated for assignment on August 18. Left-hander Justin Wrobleski is also with the team and is expected to be activated on Sunday with roster expansion to start against Arizona.
