Former Milwaukee Bucks assistant coach Josh Oppenheimer is set to join Porter Moser’s coaching staff at Oklahoma, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, who shared the news on X, formerly known as Twitter. Oppenheimer, who developed a strong working relationship with Giannis Antetokounmpo, will play a key role in player development and offensive strategy.
Oppenheimer began his coaching career at the collegiate level, spending over a decade as an assistant, including four seasons split between Duquesne and Delaware, before moving on to Kent State. For the past eleven years, he has been in the NBA, primarily with the Bucks. He also had stints with the Houston Rockets in 2016-17 and the Long Island Nets, the Brooklyn Nets’ G League affiliate, in 2017-18.
Oppenheimer was initially retained by former Bucks head coach Adrian Griffin, who was later dismissed mid-season and replaced by Doc Rivers. Rivers took over as the Bucks’ head coach in January but was unable to guide the team past the first round of the playoffs, where they were eliminated by the Indiana Pacers in six games, despite the efforts of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard.
Former Sixth Man Lou Williams endorses Doc Rivers
With over 20 years of coaching experience, including a championship win with the Boston Celtics in 2008, Rivers faces significant pressure in the upcoming 2024-25 season to lead the Bucks to success. As Milwaukee looks to dethrone the reigning champions, the Celtics, all eyes will be on Rivers’ approach to the new season, which could be one of his last opportunities to secure a second championship.
