Two Penn State receivers have stepped up during training camp, while a promising freshman is sidelined with an injury. Penn State football coach James Franklin provided an update on the Nittany Lions’ receiving corps during Tuesday’s media availability.
Peter Gonzalez, a true freshman who had made an impression early in camp, is out with a “long-term injury,” according to Franklin. Gonzalez, a graduate of Pittsburgh Central Catholic, had been praised by both players and coaches for his early work in training camp. This injury is not his first; he tore his ACL in January 2022 during his junior year of high school but managed to return to play later that year.
Penn State quarterback Beau Pribula spoke highly of Gonzalez, noting his maturity and potential on the field. “Peter is impressive,” Pribula said, highlighting Gonzalez’s size, speed, and ability to make plays.
Meanwhile, Trey Wallace and Liam Clifford have taken charge in the receivers’ room. Franklin noted that their emergence has been a significant development during training camp. Wallace, who missed part of last season due to injury but returned to contribute in the Peach Bowl, and Clifford, who had 13 catches for 130 yards last season, have been key in leading the group. Both are also roommates with Pribula, who praised their leadership and performance.
Franklin also mentioned that camp has been physically demanding, impacting several positions, including running back. While the top two backs, Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, remain healthy, the competition for the No. 3 spot has been hindered by minor injuries. Additionally, tight end Khalil Dinkins has missed some practice time but is expected to be an essential part of the offense once he returns.
Penn State is set to open its 2024 season on Aug. 31 against West Virginia, with kickoff scheduled for noon ET on FOX.
