The Pittsburgh Steelers have reportedly contacted former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas this offseason.
With new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith joining the Steelers to improve the team’s quarterback situation, there is hope for enhanced offensive performance overall. Adding another weapon, like Michael Thomas, could significantly benefit the offense.
Brad Spielberger of PFF estimates that Thomas might be looking at a one-year “prove-it” deal worth around $6 million, though it could potentially be less given current contract trends. Former Steelers linebacker Arthur Moats supports the idea of signing Thomas, noting that Thomas would be a low-cost, proven player, which could motivate the other receivers to step up their game.
Thomas was released by the Saints in March despite restructuring his contract in 2023. Last season, he caught 39 of 60 targets for 448 yards and one touchdown. Zachary Smith of Steelers Now confirmed the team’s contact with Thomas, though it’s unclear how serious the talks are.
Thomas could be a bargain due to his injury history, which includes significant missed time due to an ankle injury and other issues over the past few seasons. Despite these challenges, Thomas remains a talented player, with accolades including two-time first-team All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler. If he joins the Steelers’ receiving corps alongside George Pickens and Roman Wilson, he could help stabilize the group.
Thomas’s potential fit with the Steelers is intriguing, but his injury history and off-field incidents, including a 2020 fight with a teammate and a 2023 arrest for battery, complicate his situation.
