Apologies, Sean Desai, but it’s time for a change in the defensive coordinator position for the Philadelphia Eagles, sidelining Matt Patricia. Consider revisiting Georgia for a potential solution.
More precisely, a second interview with Glenn Schumann, the Bulldogs’ co-defensive coordinator, could be a wise move. Last year, the 33-year-old coach was one of the candidates interviewed by the Eagles after Jonathan Gannon departed to lead the Arizona Cardinals.
Despite choosing Desai as the new defensive coordinator and bringing in Patricia as a senior defensive assistant, it has become evident that this decision was misguided. Patricia is now in charge of a team that ranks fourth in the league for the highest points conceded.
Bringing in a coach with a track record of success, such as Dan Lanning, who played a crucial role in Georgia’s consecutive national championships in 2021 and 2022, would seem like a logical move for the Philadelphia Eagles, especially considering the presence of five Georgia players in their defensive unit. Lanning, who has a total of six national championships, with the initial four achieved under Nick Saban at Alabama, has a history of success.
Despite having the opportunity to hire Lanning earlier, the Eagles didn’t make the move. Lanning, however, maintains connections with Philadelphia players, like cornerback Kelee Ringo, and expressed his gratitude for being considered during the interview process but offered no insights into why he wasn’t selected for the job.
As Georgia’s fall camp unfolded, Lanning revealed his ongoing communication with Eagles players, emphasizing his commitment. With the Bulldogs narrowly missing a third consecutive national championship, Lanning’s defensive prowess was evident in their dominant performance in the Capital One Orange Bowl against Florida State, securing a 63-3 victory.
For the Eagles, particularly with key players like Ringo, Jalen Carter, and Nakobe Dean, this might be the opportune moment to secure Lanning if they aim to maximize player potential in the upcoming season. If Lanning harbors aspirations for an NFL coaching role, this year could present a crucial opportunity.
