Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters has outlined his vision for the future, and it starts with the NFL Draft.
The Washington Commanders have knocked over the first domino this offseason, and that was hiring Adam Peters as the new general manager.
But when tasked with building an organization back up to where it can finally compete in the playoffs and beyond, how the team gets there is a matter of vision.
For Peters, ultimately, the vision going forward is to build through the draft, while being cautious with free agency additions.
“I perceive this scenario as quite reminiscent of our arrival in San Francisco back in 2017,” remarked Peters. “There are notable parallels, providing me with a substantial foundation from that past experience. We’ll draw insights from both our successes and shortcomings. The overarching strategy remains consistent – building primarily through the draft and complementing our roster via free agency. Our approach will be methodical and focused on the selection process in free agency. Nevertheless, our core emphasis will be on building through the draft.”
Opting for the strategy of building through the draft is a wise choice, particularly when holding the No. 2 overall pick. The Commanders face an intriguing decision regarding how to utilize this pick. There’s speculation about the possibility of trading up to secure USC’s Caleb Williams or selecting another quarterback like Drake Maye.
The future of current quarterback Sam Howell as the team’s starter is uncertain, creating an air of mystery around his tenure in Washington. With the potential to draft a quarterback who could lead the team for the next decade, the question arises: Is Howell the definitive choice for Washington moving forward under the leadership of Peters and Harris? This is a pivotal decision that the franchise must navigate and resolve.
