The New York Yankees have kicked off the season with an impressive 16-8 record, but they’re not yet at full strength. Their pitching staff has been instrumental in their success, and there’s talk of bolstering it further with a potential trade for Miami Marlins reliever Tanner Scott, according to Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report.
Kelly mentioned that Scott could be a good fit for several contending teams, including the Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers, and the New York Yankees. With the Marlins struggling at 6-19, Scott is likely to be one of many players on the trade block.
Currently boasting a 2.95 team ERA, the Yankees’ pitching has been solid, ranking fourth in the majors. In 2023, they finished 10th with a 3.97 ERA, but their bullpen excelled with a league-best 3.34 ERA. This season, through 24 games, their bullpen has posted a 2.98 ERA, ranking seventh in the league.
Scott has been effective, converting four of five save opportunities with a 3.38 ERA across 10.2 innings in 2024. Last year, he appeared in 74 games for the Marlins, boasting a 2.31 ERA and striking out 104 batters.
Kelly expects Scott to be in high demand, especially if other relievers like Helsley, Emmanuel Clase, and David Bednar aren’t available. With Clay Holmes serving as the Yankees’ closer, Scott would add depth to their bullpen.
Despite their pitching’s success, the Yankees have faced injuries, notably missing Gerrit Cole, the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner. Cole aims for a return around June 1st. Additionally, injuries to Nick Burdi, Tommy Kahnle, and Jonathan Loáisiga have affected the bullpen, with Loáisiga out for the season due to a UCL tear.
Given Scott’s contract status and the Marlins’ struggles, he could be an ideal trade candidate for teams seeking bullpen reinforcement for a deep postseason run.
